Macaroni and Cheese Recipe – Homemade Mac and Cheese

In both the United States and Canada, macaroni and cheese, sometimes referred to as “mac and cheese” or “mac n cheese,” is a dish that is considered to be a traditional comfort food. This dish is traditionally prepared using elbow macaroni noodles and a cheese sauce.

The sauce is often prepared by first creating a roux by melting butter and flour together to produce a paste, followed by the addition of milk and various kinds of cheese, such as cheddar, to produce a mixture that is thick and smooth.

After that, the pasta is combined with the sauce, and the dish is placed in the oven to cook until it is bubbling and browned.

Breadcrumbs and bacon are two examples of additional ingredients that can be added to give the dish a different texture and depth of taste.

As well as being a common staple in many people’s kitchens, it is also sometimes thought of as a “comfort meal.”

Recipe

14oz (400g) Macaroni (pasta)

1 cup (115g) of Cheddar Cheese

¾ cup (85g) of Gruyere Cheese

¾ cup (85g) of Mozzarella Cheese

4 tablespoons (60g) of butter

4 tablespoons (30g) of Flour

4 cups (1L) of milk

1 teaspoon of salt

¼ teaspoon of pepper

¼ teaspoon of nutmeg

Method

Get your empty bowls and containers ready

Add 1 cup (115g) of Cheddar Cheese into a bowl

Add ¾ cup (85g) of Gruyere Cheese to the Cheddar Cheese

Add ¾ cup (85g) of Mozzarella Cheese to the same bowl

Then Mix with a spoon

Put a pot on fire and fill half fill with water to boil

Add 1 teaspoon salt to the pot of boiling water

Add 14oz(400g) Macaroni to the boiling water

Then cook to Al Dente (to your tooth or how soft you would like it to be)

Time to make the Sauce

Put another pot on fire

Pour 4 tablespoons (60g) of butter

Let them melt over low heat

Add 4 tablespoons (30g) of Flour to the melted butter on fire

Whisk and cook for 2 minutes over mid-low heat

Gently pour 4 cups (1L) of milk

Cook and whisk for about 5 to 6 minutes until notice a slight thickness

Then take the pot away from fire and add the following ingredients.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon of pepper and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, then whisk gently.

Remember you already have your bowl of Cheese mixtures ready?

Pour ¾ of the cheese mixtures into the cooked milk pot

Ensure you whisk steadily as you pour to make the cheese mixtures sink into the pot of milk

Back to your pasta

Drain the Macaroni (pasta) and pour into the sauce or milk pot

Stir till the Pasta mixes

Time to Bake

Transfer or pour all into a baking dish

Level the top of the pasta to flatten its surface with a spoon – This is to level the pasta to fit in the baking dish

Remember you only poured ¾ of the Cheese mixtures into the sauce or milk pot earlier?

Therefore, Sprinkle the remaining cheese on the pasta while in the baking dish.

Proceed to bake at 356F (180C ) for about 20 – 25 minutes.

There you go, your Mac and Cheese is ready.

Serve Warm and Enjoy.

Recommendation

When preparing macaroni and cheese, whole milk is recommended as the type of milk to use since it creates a more rich and creamy texture than most types of milk do, making it the ideal milk to use in this recipe.

On the other hand, 2% milk or a mixture of milk and cream can also be used to achieve the same outcome.

It is best to avoid using skim milk because it cannot replicate the same amount of creaminess. Also You can use a single type of Cheese and in fact any type of cheese you want.

If you have only one type of cheese, then you can make use of few cups of milk, or if you fear it been liquefied, then you can reduce the milk to 2 ½ or 3 cups.

Also, before you bake, you can also add other toppings like bacon, onions, tomatoes or whatever taste you desire.
